Other steady contributions meant we were able to set a target of 243 while, critically, only losing four wickets in the process. Hornchurch had started the day 5 points clear in the table by virtue of their victories while we suffered abandoned matches but by tea we had earned 8 bonus points to their 1, overhauling the defecit and putting us in pole position should the game end in a draw.

Knowing they needed an outright victory the Hornchurch openers started aggressively and reached 50 in the eighth over before Alex Young made the first breakthrough. Not for the first time this year it was a pitch for accuracy and guile as Nick Gibbs and Kieran Savill turned the screw on the middle order. Despite a few lusty blows wickets fell regularly to the pair as they wrapped up the job sharing the remaining nine victims.

Andy Scrase was unlucky to receive a cut just under the eye attempting a skied catch in the gathering gloom - he was also playing his final game for the club as he moves to Kent in the close season. We all wish him well.

A monumental celebration followed!

The success of the season has been down to the hard work and commitment of the whole squad with eleven players appearing in 8 or more of the 14 games played. At training many of these second XI players have been the most consistent in attendance. Thank you to everyone that has played in the team this year.

Teams for 3rd / 4th September

First XI away at Woodford Wells - meet 9:30am at Castle Park

Austin (c), Ahmed, De Silva, Fisher, Foster, Hennessey, Pandya, Sneath, Stephens B, Stephens G, Ul Haq. With Leigh needing points in their battle to avoid relegation and C&EE keen to wrap up promotion both sides were reluctant to offer too much.

Having won the toss based on Friday's clear weather forecast skipper, Gilly, asked Leigh to bat first. Armed with an up to date forecast we could have elected to bat with more control over the destiny of the game.

Leigh were 66-3 after 22 overs when the rain came and play did not resume until 4:50pm. Scrasey collected two more victims caught behind and Vijai took a simple catch at short cover off Gibbsy. On resumption Leigh clearly didn't feel confident to reach 150 and went on the defensive, Kieran Savill and Gibbsy beat the bat time and again but could only add one more wicket despite attempting a variety of deliveries including one "left arm around" that grubbed and nearly bowled the stuborn #3.

Although we were able to bowl the remaining 30 overs in little over an hour and 10 minutes this did not leave enough time for us to receive 25 overs in reply and therefore the game was dead and according to the rules of the competition abandoned.

A frustrating day for all involved on both sides. However results (or rather lack of results) elsewhere mean that the Second XI is definitely promoted to the Premier Division for next season as we lead Hadleigh in third place by 42 points. The title is now almost certain to be decided in the final game against second placed Hornchurch on the last day.

Junior Presentation Evening

Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club will be holding their end-of-season junior presentation evening at Castle Park on Friday, September 16, from 7pm.

All junior members, from kwik cricketers up to the under 16s, and their parents are invited to come along to reflect upon the season past and to find out who will win this year's awards.

Parents are asked to make a contribution of snacks or other food towards a shared supper.

See you there.

Neil Thomas
Junior cricket administrator
Colchester and East Essex CC

Lowest Ever Score at Castle Park?

In a quite remarkable session C&EE Second XI dismissed Loughton Second XI for just 22 runs, with Andrew Scrase taking 5 wickets for 2 runs and Alex Young 5-14. Both bowlers maintained a great line, not giving any scoring opportunities and with a little seam movement induced eight edges caught behind the wicket. Young keeper Ed Greenwood bagged five catches.

With the innings wrapped up inside 90 minutes, Kieran Dale knocked off the required runs inside 5 overs and an early tea was taken and the Essex groundstaff got an unexpected afternoon off.

A win next week against Leigh-on-Sea will guarentee promotion but Hornchurch are still hot on our tail at the top.

The Third XI wrapped up a satisfying win over Southend & EMT, batting first they got off to a reasonable start before a middle order collapse left them at 138-9. Steve Wombwell (43*) and Neil Lenihan (23*) put together a half century partnership to allow skipper Neil Parsons to declare at 198-9.

Ollie Bocking opened the attack with a sharp spell of bowling but it was the accuracy of Mark Vickers (8-4-8-4) that destroyed the Southend batting line up to seal the win.

Other results left the Third XI top of Division 3 but remaining games against Buckhurst Hill and Belhus remain critical and as these two also have to play one another Hornchurch 4th XI are still in with a shout of promotion.

Team to play Mistley - Thur 11th Aug

PiriPiri Premier away @ Mistley - meet 11:45am at Castle Park.

Savill K (c), Savill G, Ahmed, Ul Haq M, Barry, Sneath, Dale, Vickers, McEvoy, Jayasooriya, Bocking.

Teams for 6th / 7th August

First XI away @ Brentwood - 11:30am start - meet 9:15am at Castle Park

Russell (c), Dale (w), Austin, Ahmed, De Silva, Fisher, Kennedy, Pandya, Stephens B, Topley, Ul Haq. Kelvedon beat Abberton’s score of 98 in a close match while Colchester eased past Great Waltham by 74 runs. Colchester got 125 for 4 with Natalie Samaranayake top scorer on 26 retired and Stella Layzell reaching 25. Z. Brown got 2 for 20 for Great Waltham. Waltham never recovered from losing a wicket first ball from Kara Toleman and they were all out for 51 in 18 overs. Liz Artindale finished off their innings with two wickets and a run out in her one over.

In the final, Colchester won the toss and batted first. They got off to a flying start with Natalie Samaranayake, Kara Toleman and Kiri Samaranayake all reaching 25 in quick order with some great hitting. B. Wilson (2 for 19) and L.West (2 for 20) then made inroads into the Colchester middle order and their final total was 118 for 7 in the twenty overs.

In reply Kelvedon also got off to a quick start with openers Beth Wild retiring on 28, 24 of which were in boundaries and T. Yates reaching 26. The run chase was carried on by T. Wilson (16 not out) and S.Bendall (17) with their quick running between the wickets putting Kelvedon ahead of the run rate. Colchester put the brakes on late in the innings with fine bowling by Danielle Lavender (2 for 17), Lorraine Hartley (1 for 13) and a crucial maiden over by Natalie Samaranayake. Kelvedon required 8 off the last over to win but some cool bowling by Hartley and an athletic stop on the boundary by Toleman denying Kelvedon a match-winning 4, restricted Kelvedon’s young team to 115 for 4 and ensured Colchester retained the trophy won last year. It was an exciting end to a competitive match.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wF8YhYkDVCg/TjbWiFnwNuI/AAAAAAAAAPo/UFVS19CtBH0/s1600/Colchester%2BWomens%2BCC%2Bweb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; Allison and Charlie Fernandes opened the batting and immediately took the game to the Sudbury bowlers racing to 131 off just 10 overs.

They were finally parted with the score on 179 when Fernandes was run out for 78 which included 11x 4s. Allison continued to dominate the bowling and although he was getting tired brought up his well deserved century in the 20th over finishing on 106 not out with 14 x 4s and 1 x 6.

This was a tremendous achievement by a young batsman and more than made up for his disapointment after falling 2 short of the magic number a few weeks ago against Wivenhoe.

A final score of 235 was always going to be too much for Sudbury, who finished a mere 188 runs short, with only one batsman getting to double figures. The highlight of the fielding performance was a stinging catch taken by Amy Haines at square leg off debutant Kesh Pandya's bowling.

Colchester 235 for 2 v Sudbury 47 all out. Colchester won by 188 runs.

Man of the Match: Ben Allison

Second XI Suffer First Defeat

After a string of victories stretching back over 12 months, 14 straight wins interrupted only by three abandoned matches, that's outright victories in time cricket remember, the C&EE Second XI finally succumbed to a defeat.
