Ladies vs Abberton

Abberton 74 all out (5 points) lost to Colchester & EE 117 for 7 wkts (20 points) by 43 runs

Batting first Colchester & EE got off to a tremendous start with openers Natalie Samaranakye (26 retired) and Kara Tolman (26 retired) taking command. Kiri Samaranakye (26 retired) continued the punishment supported by L Stuchfield (14) and Jenny Grinter (13). The tail, in the attempt to add quick runs folded to the bowling of Min Patel (19 for Four) and Hannah Jeffrey (12 for Two) leaving the visitors on a very creditable 117 for 7.
In reply Abberton started steadily with Jo Sibley (10) leading the way. Further resistance came from Hannah Jeffrey (15) and Hannah Porter (15), but they were always behind the rate. Accurate bowling from all of the Colchester bowlers kept them in full control with L Stuchfield (15 for Three), Kara Toleman (13 for Two) and Natalie Samaranakye (16 for Two) the main wicket takers. So complete was the Colchester control that they dismissed the home side in the eighteenth over.

Down to Earth with a Bump

The Second XI suffered a comprehensive 9-wicket defeat against Ardleigh Green to restore a sense of perspective following last weeks win over Hornchurch. Although the margin was convincing there were some performances of note and apart from a crucial batting collapse we played fairly well.

Simon & Badger started things off at a canter with 50 on the board after just 10 overs but once Simon unluckily slipped and trod on his stumps there was a flurry of wickets leaving us in servere peril at 67-6. On debut, young Jack Sneath batted with great maturity to steady the ship before launching into sime fine shots. His effort was well supported by Tashaq, Matt Godbold and Miguel who all contributed useful scores to earn us 6 batting points.

With renewed hope we started well keeping the score under control and beating the edge of the bat time and time again. Tom Bode being particularly unlucky against the right handed opener who couldn't get a bat on it. Miguel was a little wayward in striving to take a wicket. Jack Sneath bowled a tidy spell again beating the batsmen without luck. Spin twins Tashaq and Matt were difficult to get away and Tash eventually forced an opening thanks to a good catch from his spin partner. Matt bowled with great control and enjoyed a useful 7 over spell.

Things fell apart a little after drinks as the Green batsmen opened up and it was disappointing that we were unable to generate any pressure in the last 20 overs.

C&EE vs Sudbury Ladies

Sudbury 77 for 3 wickets (20 points) beat Colchester & EE 76 all out (3 points) by 7 wickets

Sudbury won the Toss and elected to field first. Some tight bowling by Lizzie Philp (7 for 0) and Penny Everret (8 for four) restricted the batters but then Colchester's player of the match, Kara Toleman (29 not out) scored quickly. Jenny Grinter (13) also batted well but excellent all round fielding restricted Colchester to 76 runs.

Colchester's opening bowlers, Kara Tolman (8 for 0) and Natalie Samaranayakr (18 for 0) started well and frustrated the Sudbury openers. However they eventually got into a good rhythm. A. Alecock (16) was run out but player of the match for Sudbury, Penny Everret (27 retired) steadied the ship and along with Kirsty Sloan (25 retired) helped Sudbury to win with one ball to spare. An exciting finish.

Thrilling Hornchurch Win

The Second XI recorded a thrilling victory over Hornchurch in a game that had everything.

The home side executed their plans to a tee batting first, securing the maximum batting points with a decent total of 212, and then Scrasey (7-31) put in an inspired spell to secure the win. After destroying the top order to leave the visitors at 35-5 Hornchurch consolidated and manipulated the bowling for 10 overs setting up an assult in the final hour. Edwards (107) suddenly made batting look easy by smashing it straight down the ground reducing the required rate dramatically but wickets were always going to be critical. The C&EE fielding somewhat self destructed but never gave up and once the break through came the game was back in the balance. When Scrasey returned to take the final two wickets the win was in the bag.

Earlier Gilly (52) and Badger (30) set a good platform on which Kayle (57*) was able to capitalise. Although we were never able to dominate totally wickets were always in hand and a total beyond 200 was always within reach. Chamath (37) pushed home the advantange in the late overs with some great shots.

The exciting win consolidated the team spirit that's starting to emerge in the Second XI - hopefully this good start can position us for a good season.

Hard Fought Draw

The second XI had to contend with the worst of the conditions after Harold Wood skipper won the toss and after a conference with senior players decided to bat first. With almost contant drizzle in the first 90 minutes of the match it was difficult for the C&EE bowlers to run in and deliver with any confidence of footing or grip on the ball.

Despite this Miguel and Scrasey bowled well but were punished when off target as the Wood batsmen made good progress. The introduction of Malcolm turned the game as he took the two vital wickets of the openers and Scrasey took out their #3 to suddenly leave them three down with less than a hundred on the board. A rebuilding phase took the score along more slowly as Tashaq bowled his usual tight line eventually getting his reward thanks to two fine catches by Miguel. The run chase accelerated in the final few overs but Miguel and Tashaq bowled brilliantly to restrict the home side to 199-8.

The C&EE reply started more brightly than the improving weather with a flurry of early boundaries but once the Wood bowlers found their range it became apparent that the drying wicket was going to pose more problems than when it was evenly wet. A steady flow of wickets meant we were out of the game well before the last hour but Chamath and Tashaq fought hard for the draw batting out the final 20 overs to become the two top scorers in the innings.

At this stage of the season it was key not to lose, especially given the poor weather conditions meant we bowled 52 overs but only faced about 40 and therefore would have had a tough job winning outright.

C&EE vs Eight Ash Green Ladies

Eight Ash Green 90 for 5 (20 points) beat Colchester & EE 89 for 6 (5 points) by 5 wickets

Batting first in quite poor light conditions, Colchester & EE made a good start with Kara Toleman (14) and Natalie Sama (14) at a good rate. Some good fielding by the home team was rewarded with two quick run outs. Stella Layzell (19 not out) anchored the Colchester innings supported by Liz Artindale (9 not out) pushing the final score to a respectable 89. For Eight Ash Green, Lynn Gunn (1-9) was the pick of the bowlers with the other three main bowlers picking up a wicket apiece.
In reply the Green were soon into their stride with Lynn Gunn (14) and Di Passfield (21) scoring steadily at five an over. Victoria Smith (15) joined Passfield producing some big hitting. With their collective downfall it remained for skipper Debbie Aylward (7) and Debbie green (9 not out) to usher the team home with four overs to spare. For Colchester, Sophie Little (2-9) was the pick of the bowlers.

Cup Upset Avoided

CEECC completed a hard fought victory in the second round of the Essex League cup against a determined Belhus outfit on Saturday. After winning the toss and inserting the opposition, we found the going tough as the Belhus openers got off to a brisk start on a decent batting wicket. Only once the pace was taken off the ball did we start to work our way into the game, with Nick Gibbs, Alex Young and Mark Vickers all squeezing the scoring rate. Wickets were hard to come by though, and with plenty left in the shed Belhus could swing the bat in the last 10 overs, which they did to some effect. Some lacklustre Colchester fielding aided their cause, and a final total of 215/6 saw the match evenly poised at the halfway stage.

In reply we lost a couple of early wickets, before a steadying partnership between Omar Ahmed and Greg De Silva put us back on track and ahead of the all important run-rate. With rain around this was a constant consideration, and we lost regular middle order wickets in the effort to stay ahead of the rate. De Silva stood firm and despite some tight spin bowling from the Belhus slowies he completed an excellent century, remaining not out as the winning runs were calmly stroked by number 10 Sam George in the penultimate over.

This ensures progress to the quarter finals of the cup later in the year, and the focus now turns to the start of the Essex League, with a home fixture against newly promoted Loughton next Saturday.

Friendly Victory

While Belhus first XI gave our guys a good run for their money in the Cup, things were a little more 'friendly' at Castle Park. A 40-over game was set due to the poor weather forecast and the inaccuracy of the visitors sat-nav. C&EE won the toss and elected to field first, opening the bowling with Malcolm and Tom Bode on his début. Both were inexpensive but Tom (7-5-7-1) posed the greater threat reeling off 5 overs without conceding a run getting some good swing movement to trouble the opening batsmen. Miguel, Dave Wilson and Tashaq all kept up the good work each taking a wicket, Rob Nicholson and Ryan Mayes also getting a couple of overs as Simon rotated the attack to ensure everyone get involved. The visitors never really got out of first gear and their total of 124-8 never looked competitive.

In reply Simon was out second ball leaving Badger Ball and Malcolm Edwards to build a match winning partnership, Malcolm in particularly good form. When Badger fell LBW Ryan kept up the brisk scoring rate before being bowled by a useful leg-break. David Heard fell cheaply but Dave Wilson put paid to any hopes of a late upset to bring victory in just the 25th over.

A confidence boosting victory ahead of the serious stuff starting next Saturday.
